Answered by the admin Hello Mike, I have measured the tip for this item and at the thickest point just before it begins to angle it measured at 2.37mm.
  2. I have a collection of 25W and 18W soldering irons which need replacement tips. I've measured the heating elements on the irons, and they are both 4.5mm diameter. Is there any significant difference between the replacement tips for these 2 irons, since they will both fit onto either iron? Is there any reason why I can't just buy a number of tips for one iron and fit them to both?

Answered by the admin It's to do with how much heat the different tips transfer. You might find that the 18W iron can't keep the 25W tip hot enough to work (the 25W tip will have more thermal mass which helps keep the temperature steady when soldering larger parts but also requires more energy to heat). Similarly an 18W tip on a 25W iron will likely get too hot and the tip will oxidise very quickly and require frequent cleaning. Also please note that these tips are made for Antex brand soldering irons, they might not fit other brands of soldering iron.
