Kitronik Lesson in a Box - Craft & Code for the BBC micro:bit

Get creative by combining the BBC micro:bit and electrical components with Kitronik Craft & Code! Designed by teachers and tested by pupils! Suitable for learners aged 8 and above.

The Kitronik Lesson in a Box® Craft & Code for BBC micro:bit is a fun and engaging way for students to learn about coding as part of wider, craft-based projects. Using Version 1 or 2 of the BBC micro:bit, this board allows beginners aged 8 and above to design and control various craft projects using MakeCode for micro:bit. MakeCode is an intuitive, block-based coding environment.

These projects are designed to be easy for a teacher with any experience level to deliver. All electronic components are helpfully stored within the box. Simply look at the ‘Resources’ section in your chosen project directory to find the additional crafting materials needed!

The Lesson in a Box® Craft & Code is a complete set of electronics and teaching resources to enable successful cross-curricular lessons with minimal teacher effort. The kit and teaching resources have been tried and tested by real pupils and developed by real teachers to save you precious time.

In developing this box, we wanted it to be affordable, useful and robust enough for teachers to use time and time again. The resources are aligned with UK and US curricula, and encourage personal development skills, whilst demonstrating the value of STEAM activities in their curriculum.

All of the teaching resources are set out in a teacher, user-friendly way, including lesson plans, presentations, worksheets and templates where applicable. These are supplied in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and PDF formats, which can be copied, modified, and printed to suit your own teaching style.

All of the lesson resources will be available for you to access through a password-protected portal. Within this portal are the directories for each project and a ‘Start Here’ directory to help you get started with your Lesson in a Box®.

We have designed a custom extension to support the Craft & Code board used in this project, which can be accessed through the ‘Extensions’ tab in MakeCode. All instructions on how to do so can be found in the lesson resources. This extension contains custom blocks that enable users to seamlessly integrate their creative crafts with programmable controls, fostering both innovation and technical proficiency.

This hands-on learning tool not only enhances crafting skills, but also lays a strong foundation for understanding core coding principles, making it an invaluable resource for young learners.
