Announcing Kitronik Craft and Code for micro:bit

We are excited to announce the launch of our newest product for the classroom, the Kitronik Craft & Code board. Available in single-pack and Lesson in a Box version, Craft & Code is a fun and engaging way for students to learn about coding as part of wider craft-based projects.

In this blog post, we'll take a close look at the features of Craft & Code and show you all the ways in which it can make a difference in your classroom.

Kitronik Craft & Code - An Overview:

The Kitronik Craft & Code for BBC micro:bit is a fun and engaging way for students aged 8+ to learn about coding as part of wider craft-based projects. Using any version of the BBC micro:bit, this board allows beginners 8+ to design and control various craft projects using MakeCode for micro:bit.

The board has been designed for use with the MakeCode Blocks editor for micro:bit. Kitronik has created a custom MakeCode extension to support using the Craft and Code board in the MakeCode editor. This extension contains all of the blocks required to take control of every aspect of the board and the hardware connected to it.

Both versions of Craft & Code come with detailed instructions, specifically designed to both non-specialist Teachers and beginner Pupils get up and running with no fuss. The kit and teaching resources have been tried and tested by real pupils and developed by real teachers to save you precious time.

Kitronik Craft & Code Single Pack:

Using any version of the BBC micro:bit, this board allows beginners 8+ to design and control various craft projects using MakeCode for micro:bit. MakeCode is an intuitive, block-based coding environment. Everything that is needed is contained within the box, except for the standard classroom craft materials each project requires and the components listed in the 'Requires' section below.

The kit ships with a getting started booklet. The booklet serves as an introduction to the board and the additional supplied parts. It also introduces the user to the micro:bit, the MakeCode editor, writing code with the editor, and how to run programs on the micro:bit. Additionally, the booklet contains two full projects, the documentation walks the user through each project step, including creating the code.

 

 

Kitronik Craft & Code Lesson in a Box:

The Lesson in a Box (Craft & Code) is a complete set of electronics and teaching resources to enable successful cross-curricular lessons with minimal teacher effort. The kit and teaching resources have been tried and tested by real pupils and developed by real teachers to save you precious time.

In developing this box we wanted it to be affordable, useful and robust enough for teachers to use time and time again. The teaching resources cover many curriculum specifications and have ample opportunities for personal development by encouraging pupils to view traditional STEM/STEAM activities as having value across their curriculum.

UK/US Curriculum: The included USB drive contains folders for all of the included experiments, additionally, there is a Start Here folder. Included in this folder is a document that describes how Craft & Code fits in with both the US & UK Curricula. Teachers on both sides of the pond can deploy Craft & Code into the classroom with complete confidence that the work being done is in line with the digital education specs of both countries.
