  • If you live on the UK mainland and don't have any large materials or lithium batteries in your order it will cost £3.95 (£4.74 including VAT) if you spend less than £40 (£48 including VAT).

Hi David, I believe I spoke to you on the phone earlier today, unfortunately none of our items would be suitable for this as although you could create a circuit it wouldn't be practical.

would theses unit be suitable for use as a flash with the raspberry pi camera I do know how to wire them to be switched via gpio

Hi Terry, The LED may be suitable to use as a flash, it has a Luminous Intensity of 67000mCd and has a viewing angle of 110 degrees so a fairly large viewing angle. However you would need to ensure the LED is connected up correct and follows something similar to the datasheet in terms of power supply and also a power resistor, Using_a_Kitronik_3W_star_LED.pdf

Hi Lizzie, You would need to connect them in parallel, and you would need to defiantly use a power supply. One that is rated 5V 5A.

Can you suggest suitable batteries to power these LED's? I'll probably have about 6 of them in a scale model to light it from the inside.

Hi Phill, Unfortunately due to the current drain of the LED star batteries are not recommended as shown in this datasheet in the section ‘using the LED’, Using_a_Kitronik_3W_star_LED.pdf and on the second page it shows what power supply should be used.

Is this LED able to be dimmed?

You might be able to use a potentiometer, however you would need to ensure this is rated to at least 3W. You might find though that as you turn the potentiometer there is little difference in the brightness and then suddenly the Led will turn off. The best way to do this is to use a micro-controller to quickly turn the LED on and off.

Does this LED require a heat sink?

No you don’t require a heat sink, the power LED comes mounted on to special PCB star that acts to draw heat away from the LED, therefore extending its operational life. However please note during use the star LED and resistor will become hot and as such shouldn’t be touched.

Would a 5v 1amp USB charger be suitable to power this LED using the curcuit https://www.kitronik.co.uk/blog/how-to-use-3w-star-led, if not would a 5v 2amp charger be sufficient?

The 3W LED star draws around 300mA, so a 5V 1A power supply would be suitable.

Do you sell a kit to run this LED. What power supply would be required. If no kit is available could you provide the parts requied to produce a simple lamp.

If used with the USB power lead what size resistor will I need? Can USB produce enough current safely?

You cannot use this LED from a USB power lead. It requires too much current. You can use the 1W version through as detailed here: how-to-use-3w-star-led
