Hi. If I were wanting to control the speed of two motors independently both forwards and reverse what would be the best way to connect this board up.

Hi Stephen, The datasheet for the board can be found here, Motor_driver_guide_v1_1.pdf this shows how to connect a motor and stepper motor up. As long as the pins for the input and output match then you be able to control each motor. In the truth table on page 1 the 'x' refers to either 'A' or 'B'. I hope this helps.

Q:
Can motor driver board also be powered with usb. Now my motor is not turning if I connect microbit and usb cable direct to microbit. So how to power, if you do not want battery pack?

Hi there,

Yes that is correct you would not be able to power a motor through the battery cage on the micro:bit. If you provide power to the terminals of the motor driver board this will supply the motors and step down the voltage for the micro:bit as well.

With using a USB cable that would be theoretically possible you would need to strip the outer wire and put the positive and negative wires into the terminal blocks as normal.

However, I would be exceedingly careful with using a USB as the maximum these can supply a maximum of 500mA. If you draw more you could damage the PC you have this connected to. Bearing in mind that the micro:bit will automatically draw 120-200mA from the power source I would not connect anything more than a 250mA motor to the board while you have a USB as the power source.

I want to use this with the BBC Microbit but I can only find Ardinio documentation for how to control it. do you have any references for using this with the Microbit?

Hi Christian, Unfortunately we don't have any documentation for using a micro:bit with this board. However you should be able to keep the set up similar to how it is with Arduino and drop the micro:bit in its place with an edge connector to break the pins out further. As an example you could use pins 12 & 8 for one of the input pairs and pins 16 & 0 for the second input pair.

Yes you can use this along with the BBC micro:bit to drive motors. You would still need to use the edge connector breakout board to allow you to use the correct pins. 5601-edge-connector-breakout-board
