Description
Version 3 is the newest version of our best selling Mono Amplifier Kit that can be used with any personal stereo equipment, including MP3 players, making it an ideal kit choice for an amplifier case design project.
It uses an NCP2890 audio amplifier IC which is pre-mounted on the underside of the board (see image below) and can output 1.0W of power. The NCP2890 is an audio power amplifier designed for portable communication device applications such as mobile phone applications and PDAs. The IC also features an onboard “Pop and Click” at startup and closedown Noise Protection Circuit.
The kit is supplied with a pre-built jack cable, an 8ohm 66mm speaker, and a AA battery pack and can run off any voltage from 2.2 to 5.5 Volts (Absolute Maximum 6V). For a full list of parts, see the Contents section below.
Previous versions of this amp included a PP3 power connection and were designed to operate around 9V, V3.0 has been designed for use with 2 x AA batteries. There are several advantages to using AA batteries over PP3, they include; AA batteries are much cheaper, more readily available and will also last significantly longer than PP3 batteries, anything up to ten times longer.

- If you spend between £40 and £200 (£48 - £240.00 including VAT, excluding large materials or lithium batteries) delivery is free to most locations, £12 (£14.40 including VAT, excluding large materials or lithium batteries) to Northern Ireland and £15 (£18.00 including VAT, excluding large materials or lithium batteries) to UK remote locations. - If you spend over £200 (£240.00 including VAT, excluding large materials or lithium batteries) delivery is free within the UK.
Rest of the world
- These orders are sent via UPS, and the cost is dependant on the service you choose at checkout. Alternatively you can choose the free collection option and have your own courier collect it from us. International orders can only be shipped to the registered card address. Please note: International orders may be charged import duty dependant on local import laws and duty rates. How do you attach this to the solar panel charger you sell?

Basically you would set it up much like the circuit on the link below but replace the LED square with the mono amp and no other changes should be needed to the set up.

Hi Linda, The kit is supplied with all the parts required to build the kit, although it doesn't come with a separate cable to attach the speaker it is supplied with a 1M Stereo Jack lead, this can be cut to provide wire to connect the speakers and we suggest cutting this in half so you have 0.5M of cable for the speaker and for the Jack Lead.

Hi Alan, That would normally indicate a short circuit, which could have damaged a component on the board. The best option is to get for any short circuits on the board. Alternatively it could be the power source, the kit is limited to a maximum of 6 Volts. If you are still having issues email a picture of the top and bottom of the board through to support@kitronik.co.uk

Can this board be powered by the USB power lead (4101) that you sell?

Hi Fergal, Yes it could be powered by a 5V USB cable. However you would need to ensure that you do not exceed 5 Volts, and you would also not be able to power this from a USB port as it kit can draw around 500mA. As such if you wanted to power it in this method you would need to sue a wall power supply suitable for a USB cable to supply 5 Volts and a minimum of 1A.

Hi Troy, Yes the amplifier IC is pre-mounted to the back of the board. We are currently looking at getting a photo of the rear side of the board uploaded to show the IC. Hi Ali, Although the speakers do not have fixing hole we have an example of how to mount the speakers shown in the following document on page 11,https://www.kitronik.co.uk/pdf/2165-v3-mono-amplifier-kit-teaching-notes.pdf. A speaker grill could also be used to cover the front of the speaker and stop this following out of the enclosure if a hole is drilled to fit the speaker through.

Hi Larry, We have just tested this with the micro:bit connected to our new ZIP Halo board and connect the amplifier with clip leads to the ZIP Halo and it works great. We also drove it direct from the micro:bit and that worked to, all we would say is that you couldn't power the micro:bit from the USB connector. You would also need to power the amp, you could use the same 3V supply for both the micro:bit and the amplifier, connect the 3V supply to the amplifier and then use the following wire to take power from there to the micro:bit, https://www.kitronik.co.uk/4160-jst-jumper-wire-and-socket.html, ensuring it is correctly connected.
